Abstract
It is undisputable that youth, who are in their peak stages of development and capability, are a significant asset to any community, being the next leaders and changemakers of society. By empowering these youth with appropriate resources, such as those included in the Youth Education in GIS and Urban Planning Youth Initiative, these youth will be offered with the voice and courage to establish what is best for their surroundings, then actively take on the role of implementing the necessary changes to make their surrounding better suited to their needs. The Bronx Institute for Urban Systems (BXIUS) is the organization behind this program and has designed the Youth Education in GIS and Urban Planning Youth Initiative with practicality and technicality in mind, by offering education on Geographical Information Systems mapping and urban planning and systems. Implementing the project is projected to take three years at a cost closely similar to the $175,000 Innovation Prize on offer. The Youth Education in GIS and Urban Planning Youth Initiative is necessary to the Bronx community and the United States as a whole because the political climate has evolved into a highly politicized one, with an addition of many young members into the house and senate. In this spirit, there is a need to empower youth for leadership, but the logistical needs of this endeavor require financial incentives, one which we cannot currently manage. This initiative is vital for the future of our country, as well as its prosperity.
